Fishabout - Weipa Nov. 05 Our Fly Fishing Begin's

SALT WATER FLY FISHING AT IT's BEST!!
This interest all statrted way back in 2003, for several reasons. To get away from Smelly Bait, fishing with some skill involved, tying our our flies and testing them in the WILD. This is all in preparation for being "UNEMPLOYED" it's not called "RETIREMENT". We are just doing all the things we never had time to do whilst being "A Corporate Whore"
Our 1st Fly Casting lessons began in July 03, a short fly fishing trip to NZ in Nov. 03 and got the fly bug. Then more practice and lessons fly tying in April 05.At that time Gavin Platz - Owner of Tie-n-Fly, Fly Fishing Out Fitters "Where Your Fly Fishing Experience Begins" http://www.tienfly.com.au/
Gavin talked up his guided fly fishing tours to Weipa. However fully booked for 05, maybe 06. The trips cater to Fly Fishing Couples, in the old school of thought process that's Male & Female, nowadays it could mean any combination!! As it happens there was a cancellation, so after brief discussion of 30 seconds, we booked 5th to 11th Nov., reasuring Sue it would be CALM WATER sailing, and no sea sickness!
Thus we toured in our Bushtracker after Copteton Bushtracker Rally to Weipa - see "BUSHABOUT" Blog

Satelite photo's provided by http://www.googleearth.com/ As you can see some what remote and even more so up the rivers we fished!

An over view of the rivers we fished. The WENLOCK RIVER - that begins in the ranges South- West of Portland Roads, it's fresh water reaches can be accessed at the Moreton Telegraph Station Crossing. The SKARDON RIVER, is the largest river just 15nm north of Marpoon thus frequented by small vessels launched at Marpoon. The JACKSON RIVER is sandy and clear, with a deep entrance channel. The MacDONALD is also sandy and clear, but shallow. The DOUGHBOY RIVER system that connects to the Cotterall River approx 9nm north.
Notes on the PENNEFATHER RIVER, was the site of the first recored Euopean landing in Australia by Willem Jantz in the Duyfken in 1606. We toured here by vehicle, real soft sand on the beach but the Auto Land Cruiser handle it with ease.
Enough of the preliminaries - we joined the Mother Ship "MANTARAY" at Clough Landing 13nm South of Marpoon and 45 minutes vehicle ride, but 11 hours by sea from Weipa. We were surprised to find only two couples on the trip plus the guides. The Third couple had been transferred to London by BHP. ( BHP paid for the cancellation)

Our 5 star home for a week, and three Dories for day trip fishing excursions.

Sue's happy with her PINK GLOVE'S and 1st Queenie!

Had to get a pose photo for the record!

What a trip, and we didn't get seasick. Lots of fish species, romte as you can almost get. Plus learnt a lot about Salt Water Fly Fishing.

Roll on our next trip with our own Tinnie "FISHABOUT" Till the next "BLOG" - Cheers
